Welcome cards

What to write in a welcome card for a new manager

For a team welcoming its new boss: friendly, open and not trying too hard. Lines that make a good first impression in both directions.

  • Welcome! You are joining a team that really cares about what it does, and we are glad to have you leading it.

    Heartfelt
  • Welcome aboard. I look after our reporting, and I am happy to walk you through anything whenever suits.

    Heartfelt
  • We are really looking forward to working with you. Welcome to the team!

    Formal

Welcoming a new manager is a small act of diplomacy. You want to be warm without seeming to angle for favor, and honest without airing the team's history in the first message. A friendly welcome and a note on what the team is proud of does both.

It is also a chance to introduce yourself properly, since your new manager will be matching names to faces for weeks. "Welcome! I look after our onboarding flows and I am happy to walk you through them" is warm, useful and professional.

Three things worth getting right

  • Introduce yourself and what you work on.
  • Say something positive about the team they are joining.
  • Keep grievances and old history out of the card.

Common questions

Should a team give a new manager a welcome card?

Yes. It is a friendly signal that the team is open to them, and it helps them learn names quickly.

What if the team is unhappy about the change?

Keep it short and polite: "Welcome to the team, we look forward to working with you." A card is not the place to raise concerns; a one-to-one is.
