Congratulations cards

What to write in a congratulations card for your boss

For a manager's promotion, award or personal news: congratulations that stay warm and steer clear of flattery.

  • Congratulations! You have backed every one of us, and it is great to see someone back you.

    Heartfelt
  • So well deserved. Thank you for everything you taught me as my manager.

    Heartfelt
  • Congratulations on the award. The rest of the company is catching up with what the team already knew.

    Heartfelt
  • The new team is very lucky. We will miss having you in our corner every day.

    Short

    Formal
  • With warmest congratulations from the whole team.

    Formal
  • Congratulations on this achievement. It has been a privilege to work for you.

    Formal

When your boss gets promoted, the card often doubles as a goodbye, since they may be moving away from the team. It is worth saying what they did for you while they were your manager: that is the part they will not hear anywhere else.

Keep it proportionate. A short sincere line is better than a paragraph of praise that the rest of the team will read over your shoulder. If you want to say more, say it in person.

Three things worth getting right

  • Thank them for something they did as your manager.
  • If they are moving on, wish them well without making it about you.
  • Keep flattery out; specifics do the job better.

Common questions

Is it OK to congratulate your boss on a promotion?

Yes, and a group card is the easiest way: it is warm without singling you out, and it shows the team noticed.

What if my boss is leaving for a job elsewhere?

That is a farewell card more than a congratulations one. Thank them for your time together and wish them well in the new role.
