Thank you cards
What to write in a thank you card for a teacher

Formal
Teachers receive a lot of thank you cards in the last week of term, and most of them say the same thing: thank you for a lovely year. They are grateful for every one, but the cards they keep in a drawer mention a particular moment — the week a child finally understood fractions, the book they recommended, the way they handled a hard stretch the family knew about and the class did not.
Parents are well placed to write that line, because they see the effect at home: what changed, what the child talks about, what they are more confident doing now. If your child is old enough, let them add a sentence of their own. Teachers value the child's words above any parent's.
Three things worth getting right
- Name one thing that changed for your child this year. Teachers rarely get to see the result.
- Let the child write or draw something themselves, however short.
- A card from the whole class is often kept longer than any individual one.
Common questions
What should a parent write in a thank you card for a teacher?
One specific thing the teacher did and the difference it made at home: "Thank you for your patience with reading this year. She now reads to her little brother every night." Two sentences with a real detail are worth more than a paragraph of general thanks.
What can a child write in a card for their teacher?
Whatever they want to say, in their own words and spelling. "You made me like maths" from a seven-year-old means more to a teacher than anything an adult could write. Younger children can draw a picture, or record a short voice message if the card is digital.
Is a class group card better than individual cards?
They do different jobs, but a card signed by the whole class is the one many teachers keep. It records a whole year in one place, and families who would not have sent a card of their own still get to say something.
