Thank you cards
What to write in a thank you card for a friend
For the friend who helped you move, looked after the kids or got you through something. Lines that thank them properly without turning it into a debt.
Thank you for showing up without being asked. I do not know how I would have got through those weeks without you.
HeartfeltYou gave up a whole weekend for my boxes and my terrible directions. I owe you far more than a pizza. Thank you.
HeartfeltThank you for being the person I could call at two in the morning. I hope you know I would do the same for you.
HeartfeltThank you for everything, and for making it feel like nothing. That is a rare kind of friend.
HeartfeltThank you for helping me move. Our friendship survived the sofa and the stairs, which means it can survive anything.
FunnyThank you for the lasagne, the pep talks, and for pretending my plan was a good idea right up until it was.
FunnyThank you. I am now morally obliged to help you move house one day, and I accept this with grace.
FunnyThank you. You are the best.
ShortI could not have done it without you. Thank you.
ShortThank you for being there. It meant everything.
ShortWith heartfelt thanks for your kindness and generosity. It meant more than I can say.
FormalThank you so much for all your help. I am truly grateful to have a friend like you.
Formal
Thanking a friend is harder than thanking almost anyone else, because friendship runs on not keeping score. Too formal and it sounds like a transaction; too casual and it sounds like you did not notice. The card that works lands in between: warm, specific, and clear that you know exactly what they did.
Specificity does the work again. Not "thanks for everything", but the Saturday they gave up, the meals that turned up on the doorstep, the phone call at the right moment. Name it, say what it meant, and then do the part people skip: tell them what they are to you. The favour is the occasion; the friendship is the message.
Three things worth getting right
- Name exactly what they did. Friends who help rarely think it was a big deal.
- Say what it meant to you, not just that it happened.
- Skip the promise to pay them back. Offer to be there for them instead.
Common questions
How do you thank a friend for their support during a hard time?
Keep it simple and honest: what they did, what it meant, and that you will not forget it. "You showed up when I could not ask anyone. I will never forget that" is enough. You do not need to revisit the hard time itself in any detail.
Is it weird to send a friend a thank you card?
Not at all. It is rarer than it should be, which is exactly why it lands. A card says you noticed and thought about it afterwards, which a quick text in the moment does not.
What if a group of friends wants to thank someone together?
A shared card works well, especially for the friend who organised something for everyone: the trip, the hen do, the reunion. Each person adding their own line reads very differently from one person writing on behalf of the group.
