Sympathy cards
What to write in a sympathy card for a friend
Words for a friend who is grieving: honest, warm, and a promise you will still be there after the funeral.
I wish I could take some of this weight off you. I am here, today and for as long as you need.
HeartfeltI will never forget your dad's laugh at your birthday dinner. He adored you, and it showed every time.
HeartfeltNo card could hold how sorry I am. I love you, and I am only ever a phone call away.
HeartfeltYou do not have to be strong for me. Call me at 3am if you need to. I mean it.
HeartfeltI know nothing makes this easier, but I hope it helps a little to know how many people love you.
HeartfeltI am bringing dinner on Thursday, and I will keep bringing it for as long as you want me to.
HeartfeltHolding you close in my thoughts. Love you.
ShortI am here. Always.
ShortSo sorry, my friend. Sending all my love.
ShortThinking of you every day.
ShortWith deepest sympathy and love to you and your family.
FormalWishing you peace and comfort in the days ahead.
Formal
With a friend, the fear is different: not saying something inappropriate, but saying something too small. There is no line big enough, and your friend knows that. What they need to hear is that you are with them, and that you will still be around in a month, when the cards stop and the house goes quiet.
If you knew the person who died, a memory is the most precious thing you can put in the card: a story they may not have heard, a detail that brings them back for a moment. If you did not, write about your friend instead, and what you want to do for them.
Three things worth getting right
- Share a specific memory of the person who died if you have one.
- Offer something concrete: a meal, a walk, a day at the weekend.
- Write as you would talk to them. Grief does not need a formal register between friends.
Common questions
Is it OK to use humor in a sympathy card for a friend?
Only if it is the kind of gentle memory that would make them smile about the person they lost, and only if you know them well. When in doubt, save it for a later conversation.
What if I did not know the person who died?
Write to your friend: that you are sorry, that you are thinking of them, and that you are there. "I never got to meet your grandad, but I know how much he meant to you" is honest and kind.
