What to write in a holiday card for a coworker

End-of-year wishes that are warm, inclusive and a bit more than "Merry Christmas!" Lines for colleagues you like.

A holiday card for a colleague is mostly about the year, not the holiday. One line about something you did together, or something they did that made your year easier, turns a generic greeting into a thank you they will actually notice.

Workplaces are mixed, so default to inclusive wishes: "happy holidays", "season's greetings", "a restful break and a happy new year". If you know a colleague celebrates Christmas, Hanukkah or anything else, it is kind to name it.

Three things worth getting right

  • Mention one moment from the year.
  • Use an inclusive greeting unless you know which holiday they celebrate.
  • Wish them rest; most people need it by December.

Common questions

Should I say Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays at work?

Happy holidays or season's greetings are safe for everyone. If you know someone celebrates Christmas, "Merry Christmas" is warm and fine.

Is a group holiday card better than individual cards?

For a team, usually yes: one card signed by everyone is easier to organize, reaches colleagues already on leave, and keeps every message together.

One card, signed by everyone

You have the words. Card Event collects everyone else in one link, with photos, video and voice notes, and no app or account for the people signing.
